========================================= DirectShow FilterPack 2.1 (C) Reino "CoRoNe" Wijnsma http://www.degeelebosch.nl/corone ========================================= [DESCRIPTION] "DirectShow FilterPack" is a lite-weight package of media DirectShow filters (splitters/ decoders) which will enable you to play many different kinds of encoded music and video. By default you're able to play MP3 music because of the MPEG-1 Stream Splitter and the Fraunhofer MP3 Decoder which are shipped with Windows, but unlike MP3 files, Windows doesn't know how to handle Vorbis Audio (OGG files) for instance. With the OGG Splitter inside this package (plus FFDShow) Windows can handle Vorbis Audio. This package of media directshow filters mostly contains Splitter filters, and the reason for this is because FFDShow already has most of the needed Decoder filters integrated. This means, besides the filter package, you will need FFDShow too, because having installed a set of decoders is one thing, but without splitters you won't get very far. (FFDShow is a very powerful DirectShow filter for audio and video decompression, like DivX/XviD and Vorbis/AAC for instance, but FFDShow can also greatly improve the video image quality.) Without the need of Decoder filters I'm able to maintain a very small filesize; ± 2MB. This approach guarantees conflict free playback of your favorite media files, unlike certain codecpacks who install more than one media directshow filter for the same purpose, resulting in codec conflicts/errors. There are two versions available; the normal version and a Lite-version. The Lite-version doesn't include the Lossless Source Filters, neither does it include the MOD Source Filter, the CDXA Source Filter and the FLV Splitter. If you don't use any of the filters mentioned above, then I would recommend the Lite-version. [REQUIREMENTS] • Windows XP (most of the filters are unicode releases and are for Windows XP only.) • DirectShow based media player like; Zoom Player, RadLight, The Core Media Player, Windows Media Player, and Media Player Classic (MPC). (Note: This doesn't include WinAMP or XMPlay, since those are plug-in based media players.) (Note: Media Player Classic (MPC) has most of the included DirectShow Filters already integrated, so it's your choice whether you use them or those from my DSFP.) • FFDShow • QuickTime Alternative (optional) QuickTime Alternative will allow you to play QuickTime files (MOV,QT) without having to install QuickTime Player. • Real Alternative (optional) Real Alternative will allow you to play RealMedia files (RA,RM,RAM,RMVB) without having to install RealPlayer. • Windows Media 10 Lite (optional) For those of you who removed Windows Media Player with nLite, this package enables you to play Windows Media content (WMA,WMV) again. (× Not included in Lite-version.) [INSTALLATION] 1. Extract "DSFP-2.1.exe" or "DSFP-2.1_lite.exe" to a logical place. (If you pick "C:\Program Files" for example, the whole content will be extracted to "C:\Program Files\DirectShow FilterPack".) 2. Browse to the directory you just extracted the whole content to. 3. Run "DSFP_inst.bat". (In every subdirectory you'll also find an "install.bat" and "uninstall.bat" to install or uninstall every filter separately.) [REMOVAL] 1. Browse to the "DirectShow FilterPack" directory. 2. Run "DSFP_uninst.bat". 3. Delete the "DirectShow FilterPack" directory. [FFDSHOW CONFIGURATION] In the StartMenu browse to the FFDShow folder. There you will find the Audio & Video Decoder configuration panels. FFDShow is capable of handling many media formats as you can see in the "Codecs" section of both configuration panels. To be on the safe side, make sure the following media formats are enabled. • "Audio Decoder configuration": WMA7, WMA8/9, MP1,MP2, MP3, AC3, DTS, AAC, Vorbis, AMR, MS ADPCM, IMA ADPCM, and QDM2. • "Video Decoder configuration": XviD, DivX3, Generic MPEG4, DivX5, FVFW,FFDS, Other MPEG4, MP43, MP42, MP41, WMV1/7, H.263(+), H.264, MJPEG, SVQ1, SVQ3, FFV1, Huffyuv, MS Video 1, Indeo 3, Cinepak, FLV1, Theora, VP31, CorePNG,MPNG, and Techsmith. Please keep MPEG1/2 in the "Video Decoder configuration" and FLAC in the "Audio Decoder configuration" disabled. FFDShow isn't capable of handling DVDs with the integrated MPEG2 Decoder and FLAC doesn't work at all. From all the options in the Audio Decoder configuration there's only one option I would really recommend, and that would be the "Volume Normalization" option. "Volume Normalization" is especially handy when it comes to media with low volume audio. It pushes the volume to a more acceptable and normal level. As there are much more settings than only the "Volume Normalization" option, I would say; take a look around and see what fits your needs. In the Video Decoder configuration you can enable "Accurate deblocking" in the "Postprocessing" section which produces a slightly better video image quality. Although the video image quality with default settings is already very good, you can greatly enhance the video image quality with the help of "Blur & NR", "Sharpen", "Warpsharp", "Noise" and "Resize & aspect" for example. You just have to play with these settings a little yourself. (Extra) Both the Audio & Video Decoder configuration panels have this option to show you some interesting information about the current media file you're playing. In both configuration panels go to the "Tray, dialog & paths" section, and enable "Show tray icon" and "Extended info". It will show you things like: the kind of media you're playing, the current filter(s) being used, and audio statistics like bitrate, frequency, and channels. [EXTRA INFO] • The MPA Splitter from Gabest reports incorrect VBR (Variable Bit Rate) MP3 file duration. For example: a VBR encoded MP3 file with a length of 10:33, shows a length of 10:54. • Besides MP4/M4A and 3GP files, the MP4 Splitter from Gabest is now also capable of splitting the majority of MOV files (QuickTime). (For TWOS and ARAW you'll still need QuickTime Alternative) • Timeseeking problems are a thing of the past now with the latest OGG Splitter from Gabest. Unfortunately Theora support has been cancelled. • The MOD Source Filter 0.60 from DCoder has a lot of issues rendering Tracker files, sometimes resulting in hangs/crashes. Version 0.50 still hangs/crashes sometimes with certain Tracker files, but at least this version shows some normal playback. • The APE Source Filter from RadLight seems a little unstable sometimes due to sudden crashes. With the APE Source Filter from DCoder I haven't had sudden crashes yet and appears more stable. • The MPEG Splitter from Gabest is also capable of splitting VOB[MPEG2+DTS] and even MPG[AVC1+AAC]. • The MPV Decoder from Gabest is a MPEG2 Decoder, or in other words; it can be used to watch DVDs. And with FFDShow configured to decode MP2, AC3 (Dolby Digital) and DTS (Digital Theatre System), you won't need a separate DVD playing piece of software anymore! • FFDShow can produce subtitles, but it can't read multiple embedded subtitles (multiple subtitles within MKV files for example). Hence the VobSub Filter from Gabest.
